Hazard and Operability Studies

Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) are a highly specialised service offered by EIS.

A HAZOP study involves the systematic examination of a planned or existing process in your operations, in order to identify problems that may pose a risk to personnel or equipment, or reduce the efficiency of operation.

Once those problems have been identified, we can then help clients put appropriate systems in place to mitigate the risks and create a safe and efficient work environment.

HAZOP studies are based on guide-words and are carried out by a multi-disciplinary team during a set of meetings. The method also extends into hazard identification and environmental hazard identification, which allows us to classify safety and environmental hazards that may arise at the concept design stage.

EIS can provide suitably trained and experienced facilitators to chair and minute HAZOP studies as well as software for providing guide-words and recording outcomes. Our engineers are knowledgeable in a wide range of fields and can offer advice in mechanical, electrical, electronic, automation, refrigeration and process/machine safety.

EIS has facilitated successful HAZOP studies for processes including:

  • Solid material handling and batch processing systems
  • Chemical mixing systems
  • Electrical switching procedures
  • Ship loading and unloading procedures
  • Chairlift transport systems
  • Process control systems
  • Fire protection systems
  • Hazardous area systems
